Widad Mjama and Khalil Epi explore the fascinating, orally transmitted Moroccan tradition of "Aïta" - a form of musical expression by women (Chikhates) that dates back to the 12th century. Aïta means "cry" in Moroccan dialect and embodies both the call of warriors and the sensual lament of love.

Seba Kayan is exploring the Kurdish tradition of Dengbêj, a musical form of storytelling, in her search for sound. For various sound installations and her music project Carpet Concert, she uses old Dengbêj recordings by her grandmother Gare, who comes from Dêrsim and has passed on the tradition. Seba Kayan also brings oral history to life in a new context and talks about her approach in this interview.

In conversation with Ruby Sircar, artist and lecturer at the Academy of Fine Arts, the artists talk about their research and their approach to placing this socially highly relevant oral history in a new context.

We will end the evening in the festival center with food, chatting and listening to music.

The following day, on Thursday, April 18th, Aïta Mon Amour and Seba Kayan will present their musical projects live at Flex.

Duo Avin Ahmadi & Morvarid Tahmasbi
Afterward: Jam session with guest musicians
Fr, 19. April 2024, 19.30 Uhr

The duo Avin Ahmadi & Morvarid Tahmasbi opens the musical evening at the festival center. Following that, Orwa Saleh, the host of the festival center, invites everyone to the legendary jam session on the festival center stage. Numerous musicians gather to experiment, improvise, and, most importantly, have fun making music together.

The jam session is open to all musicians. We kindly ask you to register at info@salam-music.at.

Avin Ahmadi is an oud player and singer from Tehran who expresses her deepest emotions and thoughts through her creative processes. Her musical journey began at a young age with a true passion for the oud. She is currently studying music in Vienna, discovering the realms of world music, constantly learning, exploring, playing with melodies, and rhythms, and expanding her musical perspective towards Eastern music, despite her Western homeland.

Morvarid Tahmasbi is a student of media music and a talented kamancheh player who was born in Iran in October 2000. She has been taking kamancheh lessons since the age of eight and has already gained experience in various ensembles in Iran. Currently based in Vienna, she leads her own projects in which improvisation plays an important role.
